Chamber partners to assist educator externshipsby Tom Deimerly, Director of Economic DevelopmentThe Chamber was proud to partner with the Marshalltown CommunitySchool District and other area schools to promote entrepreneurship andtechnology as a critical component to long-term community workforceneeds and their importance to our long-term economic health. This wasaccomplished through an initiative of the Marshalltown CommunitySchool District to promote educator “externships”. Through “externships”,educators are able to see on-the-ground applications of coursework andhow they impact businesses. These “externships” empower educators totake the knowledge they gain back to the classroom to spread to students.Examples include the use of science, technology, engineering and math(STEM), interpersonal skills in the manufacturing and healthcare industry, analytical data analysis in the banking and insurance industry, and thewide range of skills needed for entrepreneurs and small businesses. The technology portion of the training focused on business technologywhile incorporating real world experiences in the technology, data analytics, and healthcare fields. These experiences were provided through toursand discussions with local and state leadership at many local technologyand healthcare companies. The Small Business and Entrepreneurial panelconsisted of six panelists representing the food/entertainment business, industry, home based business, marketing & design and constructionbusinesses. The panelists provided insight about their background, skillsets, and workforce needs in their individual businesses. Their rich andvaried experiences helped the educators take what they have learned andfigure out creative ways to apply it to their classrooms, while helping students learn how it is all relevant to the real world. The business, finance, and insurance sessions had more 19 participants while the overall program had more than 50 educators participate in the training.Members of theentrepreneurial businesspanel insight into theirindividual businesses for theteacher “externship”program.Photo courtesy ofMarshalltownCommunity SchoolDistrict.10Economic StatisticsEmployment – Marshall County - June(Source: Iowa Workforce Development)Labor forceUnemployedPercent unemployedTotal employmentMarshall County Construction - July(Source: Marshalltown Building Department)Building permitsNew Residential ConstructionResidential Addition/RemodelingNew Commercial/Industrial Const.Commercial/Industrial RemodelingHousing Sales Data - July(Source: Mid-Iowa Regional Board of Realtors)Single family home salesAverage sale priceMedian sale 0192018N/AN/AN/AN/AN/A17 22,000 14,000 2,246,000 443,0002019201854 139,271 121,75047 130,707 127,000Have a safe andhappyLabor Day!WWW.MARSHALLTOWN.ORG
