Be certain.DMX-512 DMX lighting control cable is based onRS-485 data cable, 120Ω impedance and acapacitance of 12 pF/ft. or less. Many lightingdesigners use 100Ω cables for DMX becausethose cables are smaller, cheaper and easierto find. The impedance mismatch and highercapacitance will make them distance-limitedcompared to true RS-485. Among the 100Ωcable types are the premise/data cables suchas Category 5, Category 5e, Category 6 andCategory 6A. Using this cable for DMX is notthe same as lighting control run with Ethernet, which use these same Category cablesbut in a completely different protocol (i.e.Ethernet) with a 100m distance. Othersuse standard microphone cables orsimilar to run DMX. As these cables varywidely in impedance and capacitance, they are poor choices for DMX and onlyrun effectively for very short distances,if at all. Three-pin XLR connectors havebeen specifically prohibited in the DMXstandard since 2004, but many still usethem.9841, One Pair DMX (RS-485)One Pair DMX (RS-485)DescriptionStandard LengthsBeldenPart NumberFt.mGaugeImpedance (Ω)CapacitancepF/ft.pF/mShieldmm.UL NEC/C(UL)TypePVC.2325.89CMPELSZH.2586.55CMGFoam FEPPVC.2045.18CMPFoam FEPFEP.2025.13CMPDatalene Foam PEPVC.2817.14CMPLTCFoam PE/ PEPVC.2406.10CMPEPVC.2406.10CMJacketPEMost Popular98411005001000152305152424 AWG(7x32)12012.842LSZH Version9841NH500100015230524 AWG(7x32)12014.526Plenum Version8284112012398984124 AWG(7x32)1201240Low CapacitanceVersion3105A22 AWG(7x30)1201136Flexible Version(1 million flexcycles)15230515241523051524152305152424 AWG(7x32)Plenum 0015230524 AWG(41x40)1201549One-pair92711241240986016 AWGSolid1241136100% foil90% braidFoam PEPVC.44011.18CMXOne-pair 600VRating3074F30152305152305610152305762152425 AWG(7x33)One-pair 18 AWG(7x26)1241240100% foil55% en.com100% foil90% braid drain100% foil90% braid drain100% foil90% braid drain100% foil90% braid drain100% foil65% braid drain100% foil85% braid drain100% foil65% braid drainNominal ODIn.Insulation1.800.BELDEN.1 (800.235.3361)3

Data CablesMany of our Ethernet cables, and some audiocables, feature bonded pairs. This technologybonds the two wires of a twisted pair togetherwithout glue so they cannot be separated. Asa result, impedance of that pair is constant, even when bent or twisted during installation.Return loss (which can affect signal quality, signal emission, noise immunity anddistance) can be significantly improved byusing bonded pairs. However, it requiresthat the pair be split before a connector isattached. Belden offers a tool, 1797B, for thispurpose. The increase in cable performance, especially after installation, is worth the fewseconds of splitting the pair. The distance between the conductors, or theconductor-to-conductor centricity, remainsfixed and stable along the length of thetwisted pair. Only bonded-pair cables offerthis type of stability. In typical non-bondedtwisted pairs, the slightest manipulation ofthese cables can cause gaps between theconductors of the pair and impair electricalperformance (shown right). Gaps cannot formbetween the conductors in a bonded-pair,resulting in consistent electrical performance.9729, Two Pair Data Cables1502R, Data Cables with Power PairNonbonded-PairBonded-PairTwo Pair Data CablesDescriptionStandard LengthsBeldenPart NumberFt.mGaugeImpedance (Ω)CapacitancepF/ft.pF/mNominal ODUL NEC/C(UL)TypeShieldInsulationJacketIndividual100% foil drainsDatalene Foamed PEPVC0.266 6.76CMFoam FEPPVDF0.261 6.63CMPFoam FEPPVDF0.255 4824 AWG (7x32)1001341Two-pair Plenum89729500100015230524 AWG (7x32)1001444Two-pair Plenum82729100030524 AWG 23051524304831152305152424 AWG (7x32)1001341Individual100% foil drainsDatalene Foamed PEPVC0.334 8.48CM24 AWG (7x32)1001341Individual100% foil drainsDatalene Foamed PEPVC0.363 9.22CM100030524 AWG(41x40)1001444100% foil85% braidFoam PEPVC Oil0.232 5.89ResistantCM6Three pair9730Four pair(Available upto 27 pair)9728One-pair(1 millionflex cycles)7205A1.800.BELDEN.1 (800.235.3361)Individual100% foil drainsIndividual100% foil drainswww.belden.com

Power CablesThese cables can carry high voltages,120VAC/240VAC some up to 480VAC.Amperage can be determined at usingthe Current Ratings Table. (See table onchart for the proper temperature rating andconductor size. (See chart on following page)To calculate the maximum current rating/conductor, multiply the chart value by theappropriate conductor factor. The chartassumes cable is surrounded by still air at anambient temperature of 25 C. Current valuesare in RMS Amperes and are valid for copperconductors only.following page)To use the current capacity chart, firstdetermine conductor size, temperaturerating, and number of conductors from theapplicable product description for the cableof interest.
