They are designed with nearly constant wallthickness, providing lower weight and cost when manufactured inexpensive stainless or alloy steels.Three-way bodies are used for either combining or divertingservices. To achieve better sealing with mating piping, the flange face ismachined with spiral grooved serration. Since the bonnet bottoms metal-to-metalin the body, the bonnet gasket compression is determined by thedepth of the gasket step on the bonnet, which is machined toprovide the required gasket compression.When the bonnet is fully installed, force is transmitted throughthe seat retainer to secure the seat ring in position. The body,seat retainer and seat ring are all machined to close tolerancesto provide the proper gasket compression. In somecases, however, the actuator is bolted directly to the bonnet.Each clamp has an inclined plane surface which, when boltedtogether, securely fastens the actuator yoke to the bonnet. See Table 4 on page 9 for packing limitations.The Guardian II formed metal bellows seal can be used wheneverservice fluid leakage to atmosphere needs to be reduced to anabsolute minimum. The standard metal bellows seal is rated foroperation in processes ranging in temperature from -320 F to1100 F (-196 to 593 C) and pressures to 1100 psig (75.9 barg).Extended BonnetThe extended bonnet protects the packing from excessive heator cold, which may inhibit valve performance. The bonnet isconstructed of carbon steel for temperatures from -20 to 800 F(-30 to 427 C) and of 304 or 316 stain less steel for -150 to1500 F (-100 to 816 C).8The flexible metal bellows is typically constructed of Inconel 625and is also available in Hastelloy C-22.The Guardian II bellows seal allows for outside pressure tominimize bellows squirm, prolonging bellows life.Cold Box Extended BonnetGuardian Metal Bellows Seal BonnetThe cold box extended bonnet permits stagnated, moderatetemperature gas to form in the bonnet, which protects thepacking from the service fluid. Typically manufactured from 304or 316 stainless steel, it handles temperatures down to -423 F(-253 C). Standard construction consists of stainless steel bonnetflange and bolting.The Guardian metal bellows seal provides protection againstunwanted packing leakage to atmosphere in processes involvingcaustic liquids or gases.The compact, lightweight design of the Guardian bellows assemblymakes it ideal for services less than 650 F (343 C) and 310 psig(21.4 barg). The precision-formed bellows is available in Inconel orHastelloy C materials.

Valtek Mark One Control ValvesFCD VLENTB0001 – 11/09Packing and GuidingPacking Box3.Two widely spaced stem guides, when used with the MarkOne’s large plug stem diameter, provide exceptional guiding.The upper stem guide also acts as a packing follower; thelower guide is situated close to the plug head for additionalguiding support, ensuring accurate alignment of plug andseat ring.4.Graphite-lined stainless steel guides provide superior guidingover wide temperature ranges and completely eliminateguide/stem galling. A variety of guides are available forvarious applications, including solid brass, Alloy 6 and glassfilled PTFE-lined stainless steel.Standard Valtek packing boxes are deeper than most conventionaltypes, providing the following advantages:1.2.The spacing between the wiper set and the main upperpacking set prevents contamination of the upper packing. Theupper set is positioned far enough away from the wiper setto avoid contact with any part of the plug stem that has beenexposed to the flowing medium. The seat ring is clampedinto the body by the bonnet and seat retainer; thus, removal of theseat is easy even under extremely corrosive conditions.In high pressure drop applications, pressure-balanced trim is usedto reduce the thrust necessary to stroke the plug by reducing thetrim off-balance area. Because the pressure-balanced plug fitsclosely to the retainer, this trim should only be used in generallyclean services.Unlike cage-guided trims that easily gall and stick, Mark Oneplugs are double-stem guided, avoiding contact between the seatretainer and plug. Because no contact is made with the plug, theretainer can be constructed of stainless steel rather than costlyhard materials. The flow characteristic is determined by the plugcontour, rather than by the opening in the retainer.Low-noise seat designs have been developed for better noisecontrol in standard Mark One valves.Metal SeatsMetal seated valves handle Class IV shutoff (ANSI B16.104,1976 – FCI 70-2). This class calls for maximum permissible seatleakage of 0.01 percent of rated valve capacity. All Valtek controlvalves are seat-leak tested after assembly and are substantiallylower in leakage than called for by this class. This exceptionalseat tightness is obtained by aligning the seat ring with the plugduring assembly. Additional seat tightness using metal seats isavailable as an option.Flow direction is under-the-plug for fail-closed and over- the-plugfor fail-open. The seal area less the stem area is designed to beslightly larger than the seat area; therefore, the plug is off-balancedto close for flow under the seat and off-balanced to open for flowover the seat.Soft SeatsThe Mark One soft seat is used in applications requiring ANSIClass VI ‘bubble-tight’ shutoff. Its design consists of an elastomersandwiched between two metal pieces. The assembled softseat is interchangeable with the hard seat for a given size andpressure rating. A wide variety of services are successfullyhandled by stainless steel trim parts. Neverthless, a general ruleis for temperatures above 600º F / 316º C. Alloy 6 is stocked formany valve trim parts. This material offers a good combination ofrelative hardness and corrosion resistance.
